Overview

The Historical Climate — Soil Moisture (28–100 cm) indicator shows the historical time series of volumetric water content in the deep soil layer between 28 and 100 cm. This deep layer represents the primary water reserve for trees and shrubs, whose roots access this moisture during prolonged drought periods, underpinning the long-term water resilience of the ecosystem. Soil moisture at this depth changes slowly and reflects the seasonal and multi-annual accumulation of water in the soil profile.

Calculation Methodology

Data from the Open-Meteo Historical Weather API (ERA5-Land reanalysis, 1940–present, ~10 km). Variable: soil_moisture_28_to_100cm.
