Green Areas per Employee measures the square meters of green area available per employee at a monitored site. It answers the question: "How much green space surrounds each of our employees?" This is a corporate sustainability metric designed for ESG reporting -- it evaluates green infrastructure relative to workforce size rather than residential population.
The indicator is calculated identically to Green Areas per Citizen, but replaces the population estimate with the manually entered number of employees for the site. Because employees are site-specific, the control area (CA) value is always absent -- only the site ROI is shown.
The metric is computed from the same green-area layer used by Green Areas per Citizen (Corine Land Cover forest and semi-natural area pixels), divided by the number of employees entered in the site settings.
where Forest area is the total forest and semi-natural area within the site perimeter in hectares, and the result is expressed in m²/employee.
Data are sourced from a proprietary 3Bee land cover layer derived from Corine Land Cover (CLC) at class level, updated annually. The employee count is manually configured by the site owner.
Gauge. A semicircular arc chart displaying the site ROI value only, with no control area panel.
Purpose: To show how much green space surrounds each employee, colored by quality grade, with a sector benchmark as reference.
Description: A semicircular arc spans from E (left, 0 m²) to A (right, 10,000 m²). The arc is divided into five color-coded quality segments. A circular marker on the arc indicates the site ROI value; the exact value in m² is displayed in large text at the center of the gauge. A benchmark line shows the sector reference value. No CA (control area) panel is displayed because the employee count is site-specific.
312.5m²Green Areas per Employee
How it's calculated: The value shown is the forest area in hectares divided by the number of employees, multiplied by 10,000 to convert to m². The arc color segment where the marker lands corresponds to the quality grade (A--E). The benchmark is derived from sector averages for sites in the same industry category.
Note: This indicator is not inverted -- higher values signal better ecological context for the workforce.
Legend:
| Level | Range (m²/employee) | Color | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| A (Excellent) | 100 -- 10,000 | ■ #00A67A | Extensive green surroundings per employee |
| B (Good) | 20 -- 99.9 | ■ #00DF80 | Good green availability |
| C (Moderate) | 5 -- 19.9 | ■ #FFD21E | Limited but present green space |
| D (Poor) | 1 -- 4.9 | ■ #FF8B16 | Very limited green context |
| E (Critical) | 0 -- 0.9 | ■ #FF367F | Minimal or no green space per employee |
Interpretation example:
If this gauge shows 312.5 m²/employee, it means each employee has access to over 300 m² of surrounding green space -- typical of a suburban campus or rural industrial park with significant natural surroundings.
Highlights Table Row. A single row in the KPI comparison table within the Highlights section.
Purpose: To allow quick comparison of green space per employee across all monitored sites in a single view.
Description: A row in the highlights table showing the site ROI value in m² for green areas per employee. The CA column is always empty for this KPI. The row is color-coded according to the quality grade. Higher values indicate better ecological context for the workforce.
How it's calculated: Same formula as the gauge -- forest area in hectares divided by the number of employees, multiplied by 10,000. The color coding uses the same A--E ranges.
Interpretation example:
If this row shows 45.2 m²/employee, it means the site has moderate green coverage per employee (grade C), with room for improvement through green infrastructure investments.
Assessment Sidebar Row. A grade row in the E4 Biodiversity section of the assessment sidebar, visible when the green areas per employee feature is active for the site.
Purpose: To display the quality grade (A--E) for green areas per employee alongside other E4 biodiversity indicators.
Description: A compact row showing the KPI name and its current quality grade letter. Clicking expands detail. The row appears only when the site has the employee count configured and the feature is enabled.
How it's calculated: The grade is derived by mapping the computed m²/employee value to the A--E quality ranges defined in the platform (same ranges as the gauge).
Interpretation example:
If this sidebar row shows grade B, the site has between 20 and 99.9 m² of green space per employee -- a good ecological context for the workforce.
Sites Progress Column. A column in the multi-site comparison table in the Sites Progress section.
Purpose: To compare green areas per employee across multiple monitored sites in a tabular format.
Description: A formatted ROI/CA cell showing the site value in m²/employee. The CA column is always empty for this KPI (CA is always null). The cell background is color-coded by quality grade. This column appears under the "assess" tag filter.
How it's calculated: Displays the computed m²/employee value formatted to one decimal place. Color is assigned by matching the value to the standard quality range table.
Interpretation example:
If this column shows "12.3 m² / --", it means the site has 12.3 m² per employee (grade C) with no control area comparison available.
| Source | Provider | Coverage | Resolution | Period |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Corine Land Cover (CLC) -- proprietary 3Bee layer | 3Bee / ESA World Cover / Impact Observatory / Sentinel-2 SCL | Europe (global equivalents for non-European sites) | CLC class-level | Updated annually |
| Site employee count | Manual input by site owner | Per-site only | Single value | Set at site configuration |
All pixels classified as forest and semi-natural areas within the site perimeter are summed to obtain the forest area in hectares. The result is divided by the number of employees (manually configured by the site owner). The ratio is converted from ha/employee to m²/employee by multiplying by 10,000. If the employee count is null or zero, the KPI returns null and no gauge is shown.
The green area calculation uses the same CLC-derived layer as Green Areas per Citizen; the only difference is the denominator. The quality ranges (A--E) are shared with the Green Areas per Citizen indicator and are delivered by the API.
